Dr Sara McBride gave an engaging talk on the US West Coast earthquake early warning system. She gave an overview of the system then covered the exciting social science research currently ongoing in this space.
The audience posed engaging questions asking about how people react to the ShakeAlert. Is there a difference between how people react to a quake vs an alert? How do they manage people’s expectation of warning window of 10s? Is the reception different depending on the media the alert is received (e.g. siren vs phones)? Sara answered these questions and covered other topics during the Q&A.
