15 October 2020 — Matatā Public School was the focal point for this year’s New Zealand ShakeOut and tsunami hīkoi drill. The school faces many natural hazards including earthquakes, volcanic activities, landslides, and tsunami, among others. The school participated in the nationwide earthquake drill, practising the “drop, cover, and hold” response to shaking. The students also practised their tsunami evacuation, through a hikoi to higher grounds.
The school is also gifted a sensor from the CRISiSLab and will be installed next year as part of a ‘seismometer in schools’ programme. The sensor will contribute to the ongoing earthquake early warning research. 1 News featured the Matatā Public School, drill, and sensor.
